2003 Dodge Neon SRT-4

Overview

The Dodge SRT-4, released in model year 2003.5, was originally meant to be a small run of a niche car that screamed extreme in terms of everything from performance to pricing. At a price of $19,995, it was, by far the fastest car under 20,000 dollars. In fact, it was menacing cars costing much more than that. Dollar for dollar, the performance was untouchable. In addition to the 215hp/230tq 2.4L turbocharged engine the car was equipped with, it also only had 1 option available, side airbag seats. Everything else on the SRT-4 came standard. There were 4 color choices. Silver, Red, Black, and Yellow. For a first year car, it was suprisingly stout. The only common problems that arised were fairly simple.. cracked headlights, a few wires that needed to be lengthened, and a small batch of bad transmissions. All these problems were readily handled by the car's warranty for all who experienced them.

Shortly thereafter, Dodge struck up a deal with Kicker Audio to provide the optional Livin' Loud system, which included a 6 disc in dash changer, subwoofer w/ amp, and a reflashed head unit to take advantage of the extra power. This package came in at just around 800 bucks, and received mixed reviews. Some felt it did not offer enough value, while others thought it was an excellent compromise for those who didn't wanna go the aftermarket route for audio.

Next up was the 2004 SRT-4. The car was essentially unchanged aside from including larger fuel injectors, and a slightly different PCM calibration. This bumped power to 230hp/250tq. The '04 SRT-4 also benefitted from a Quaife limited slip differential as standard equipment. The price bumped up a bit to $20,995 including destination. Buyers also had the ability to order their own SRT-4, which was not possible with the 03's, and a sunroof was now an option as well as the Kicker Audio system. Electric Blue paint replaced Yellow, aside from a very small run. (The rarest SRT available is a 2004 Yellow with a factory sunroof). Because the car did so well, 04 production is said to be about double that of 03. Towards the end of MY04, Dodge cut it's powertrain warranty to 3 years/36,000 miles as opposed to the standard 7/70.

Again, the car did excellent, so production went up 2-3x more for MY05. The 05 SRT-4 did little to improve on the car performance wise. The Electric Blue color was replaced with Orange Blast, and later on, Silver was replaced with Stone White. Unfortunately, a new PCM calibration gave way to a recall due to bad fuel usage and possible decreased performance. A number of transmission problems also seem to plague 05 owners, mainly problems with 3rd gear shifts. The SRT-4 ACR also became available this year. It features an improved suspension setup and 16" BBS wheels. With the end of the SRT-4, Dodge also rolled out the Commemorative edition. With only 500 made, and individually numbered, these are very rare indeed. They are Standard SRT-4's, clad in white with blue stripes. They feature a number of blue interior enhancements as well.
